Teach Yourself Psychology (Teach Yourself: Relationships And Self-Help)
p.151より

As we saw in Chapter 6, when we feel competent we are more likely to cope with problems, to make efforts to overcome difficulties, and to be successful in the end. So a child who has been brought up to interact competently in its world - who has experienced appropriate transactions and contingencies, and enough discrepancy to keep stimulating its interest in learning more - is a child who is better equipped to deal with the problems and disappointments which it may encounter in later life than one who has not had those experiences.

transaction : social exchanges with other people
contingency : events which happen after a perticular action has been made
